So yesterday was my birthday. I was hoping to buy myself a new Bushnell rangefinder, but Sunday morning we had a leak in the ceiling. So plumber + sheetrock repair = no rangefinder. (By the way, don’t take up a collection please, I’m just venting. Plus I might still go get one and then I would have one more than I need!)
So what makes a birthday happy? I think all of us enjoy receiving a thoughtful gift, a delicious meal and our favorite dessert. (Strawberry Short Cake or any variation thereof … I would be happy for anyone to take up a collection of strawberry desserts and drop them by my office …)
Today was a day on which friends and family sent words of love and well wishes. It definitely made my heart happy. It was also very humbling. And all of this – my life, my family, my friends and my Hope – are all gifts from God.
So I thought I would look to the books of Wisdom for some thoughts on happiness.
So here are Solomon and David respectively.
“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.
That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.
I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. Ecclesiastes 3:12-14
And then the greatest happiness is through that which Jesus accomplished:
“Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned.”
O Happy Day!!! He washed my sins away!!!
Definitely a Happy Birthday,
