Yesterday our church hosted the memorial service for Dr Karen Gunn who tragically lost her life on Memorial Day. During the service Steve shared this passage from John 14:
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled ; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places ; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4 “And you know the way where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to Him,“Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life ; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
As Steve reminded everyone yesterday, heaven is a real place that is open to anyone. Thomas asks a really big question…. ‘How do we know the way?’ Very simple. Jesus is the way. Jesus is the One who bore God’s wrath for our sin. He is the one who perfectly fulfilled the law. Only His blood can save us. He is the One who was laid in a tomb and then was raised out of the tomb thus conquering sin and death. Jesus is the One who is preparing a place for us who have trusted in Him where there will be no more sin, sorrow, death, pain or sickness. It will be a place where Jesus is king and love rules and life is experienced to the fullest.
So, when our hearts become troubled we need to go to Jesus and trust Him…the One who empathizes with our pain and weeps alongside of us but also reminds us that our mourning is not without hope but it is like the Josh Wilson song reminds us… ‘just the dark before the morning.’
