Walking Train-wrecks

I've gotten the privilege in the last couple of weeks to do pre-marital counseling with two different couples.  One of the things we test the couples on and look at are their personality types.  One of the things that hit me in doing this is that each one of us has been created by God with natural flaws in our personality.  In one sense, God has designed us to train-wreck our lives without Him.

If you are more of a strong personality or 'Type-A' then, without God in your life, you will bull-doze your way over anything and anyone in your path resulting in a wake of broken and scarred relationships.  If you are more of a push-over personality or a 'people-pleaser' then you will live a directionless life as you swerve this way and that to try and make everyone happy.  Everyone of us has a tendency towards one or the other and, yet, neither one is fully what God intends for us.

2 Timothy 1:7 says '7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.'  I love this verse because it speaks to the people-pleaser and to the 'Type-A' person.  To the strong personality, the Holy Spirit gives love and self-control.  To the people-pleaser, the Holy Spirit gives power and courage. So only when we walk in the Spirit do we have courage, power, love and self-control, all working together.  What is your leaning?  Let's press in and ask God to fill us freshly today so that we will not shrink back in fear but rather courageously, controlled by the Spirit, we will walk in the powerful love of Christ!

in Christ (the perfect personality),

Brian
