Yesterday morning I was reading in 1 John 3 the following three verses:
'1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God ; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.'
So how do we stay pure in a world that is enticing us into sin? How do we avoid getting pulled down paths of lust, materialism, envy, revenge, gossip, and apathy? By fixing our eyes on Jesus today. In Jesus, we see a picture of our future. God raised Him from the dead and crowned Him with a new resurrection body as God's beloved Son, who will one day come back and reign forever.
God has lavished His great love upon us as well and has legally adopted us through the blood of Jesus. We now wait the final consumation of our adoption when He will come for us and give us a new physical body that will never die, and we will live in perfect union and joy with Him forever. Right now He is preparing our new home for us and making all the final preparations.
For an adopted child, the most special day of the year for them is their 'Gotcha Day.' A 'Gotcha Day' is the day that their new parents come for them and finalize the adoption. We are still awaiting our 'Gotcha Day' when God will come for us and take us home. Fixing our hope on that incredible reality purifies us and keeps our priorities in line with what God wants rather than what the world tries to offer us.
So don't forget Who you belong to today,
