Change of Scenery

I've spent more than a little time on the road this Summer. In the month of July more than half the month, I was on some kind of mission trip. My wife Jane has been extraordinarily supportive. So this is our first week end together in a while and we had planned to do something fun. I was thinking dinner and a movie or maybe something really cool like cirque de soleil and then home in my own bed.

So I rolled out my plan for the next couple of days and it went over like a pregnant poll vaulter. (no offense to the olympians intended)

My very supportive wife had not been out of town since early June and she was ready for a change of scenery. We were going somewhere...........now.

So I sent a text to some dear friends who had extended an open invitation to their beautiful home in the hill country, thankfully we got the green light and off we went.

One of the great things about their home is the back porch facing west. Every night is a beautiful sunset followed by an amazing starlit sky. There is no ambient light from a big city diminishing the brightness of the stars. So we were treated to a spectacular star show with our host showing us the rings of Saturn through his telescope. Then to top it all off, the coup de grace was when the International Space Station sprung into view and we came out of our seats like school children squealing with excitement. It moved across the night sky with incredible brightness and speed.

So a change of scenery, is that important? I understand that 7 people have paid 50 million to ride that space station. Now that's a change of scenery.

I think what we want is a life that is full, a life that is exciting, a life with a future. We want a life of meaning and adventure. We don't want the same old same old. We desire change. We love the dynamic. Nature isn't static. Seasons change. (Well in most places). So we want something fresh. We want something new.

It is a God given desire. We want to be made new. There are over 60 scriptures in the NEW testament that include the word new. Here are just a few.

2 Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Ephesians 4:23-24
to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Colossians 3:10
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

2 Peter 3:13
But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

He makes all things new.

Keeping it fresh,

Joe
