If I Were a Rich Man

In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, Reb Tevye is singing what it might be like to be rich. He talks of many things, but he sings that the best part of being rich would be having more time to study the Holy word of God.

(Tevye) "And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men,
several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.

Reminds me of Colossians 3:16-17
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

So that is how to be rich.

Many people understandable think that when you come to church, you first sing spiritual songs and then hear the word preached.

However, our desire as a worship team is to skillfully combine God's word with music.

We hope for there to be multiple scriptures woven in lyrics that are Christ honoring and God glorifying.

The theology of the lyrics we sing should share the wisdom of God, be true to scripture and rightly describe God through Christ, as He has revealed Himself.

I believe one of the best ways to "let the word of Christ richly dwell within us," is to learn a spiritual song based on scripture.

I pray that we at StoneBridge will faithfully teach worship songs that will help all of us fully receive God's word.

Singing God's word by heart,

Joe
