God said "I am who I am" Jesus said "I Am He"

Many artists, poets and writers have portrayed Jesus as weak, misinterpreting his meekness. He has sometimes been characterized as a nice guy, mistaking his gentleness as passivity. This is not the biblical account.

During the week of The Passion, Jesus is "taken" by the soldiers from the Garden. There are a few times during Jesus' ministry where we catch a glimpse of His restrained power.

In John 18 the gospel writer reveals the all knowing Jesus and the all powerful Jesus.

First John writes that Jesus knew all that was going to happen to Him. This is a clear statement of Jesus omniscience.

He then reveals a flash of His omnipotence, when he said, "I am He", and all the soldiers first draw back and then fall to the ground.

Jesus didn't need 10,000 angels to rescue him from those who sought to take his life.

He possessed all power and with a word could have vanquished any and all.

All of which makes His going to the cross all the more remarkable. The temptation to walk away was always available. He was never the victim. He gave up His life, it wasn't taken from Him.

And when He answered, "I am He" it was yet another subtle, but clear declaration of His deity and oneness with the Father, the great I AM.

John 18:3-6
So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Exodus 3:13-14
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name? ’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “ I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘ I am has sent me to you. ’”

And so "I am" has sent you and me to go and make disciples of all nations.

I am sent,
