Arms Open Wide

Hello, this is Brian again today.  Today we’re looking at the song, ‘Arms Open Wide’ by Hillsong United.  As I’m sitting here listening to this song today it is just really stirring up emotion in me.  This is one of those songs that when you dare to honestly meditate and think about what it’s saying it takes you to a place of soul-searching.  It is a song of bold surrender to our God.  We are asking Him to take our life, to take our moments, to take our days, our plans, our calendars, etc.

Jesus’ most revealing struggle as a man was at the Garden of Gethsemane.  All night long He kept struggling with His Father’s will and the road of the cross that lay before Him.  Matthew 26:38, 39 reads, 38 He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and watch with me." 39 He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine."  In vs 42 we see this struggle continuing as it says, 42 Again he left them and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away until I drink it, your will be done."  Jesus shows us that Your will be done’ is truly the simplest prayer to say but the most difficult prayer to pray honestly.

I was challenged this week while visiting with a friend in the hospital.  As she lay in her bed facing some uncertainties with her health she dared to be very honest with me about what she was feeling.  She expressed what I wrestle with all the time, the struggle to truly surrender your plans over to God.  Handing our plans and dreams over to God often comes with tears because it’s like saying good bye to a dear friend that we may or may not ever see again.  Those plans and dreams are comforting to us and help us get up in the morning and motivate us and it’s scary to think of our life without them.  Every day is a continual struggle for me to surrender my whole life over to God.  I truly want to be able to sing this song in complete honesty and stand before God with arms open wide saying to my heavenly Father, ‘You and Your ways are my highest desire and I completely trust You with my whole life.  Have Your way!’

So let’s dare to trust Him more today than we did yesterday!

In Christ,
Brian
