Hey this is Brian. I had the opportunity to help out with the 5th and 6th Grade retreat this weekend and their theme was ‘Thirsty’. Our theme verse for the weekend was John 4:13-14 which says, ‘Jesus answered her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.’
This passage comes out of the story where Jesus reached out to the Samaritan woman at the town well in Sychar, Samaria (in between Galilee to the north and Judea to the South). In the course of their conversation Jesus uncovered how this woman had been trying to quench her thirst…chasing after men. She had been married 5 times and she was currently involved in a sexual relationship with a man who was not her husband.
This story is a great challenge to us about worship. We all have a God-given ‘soul’ thirst in us because we’ve all been created to worship. We are either worshiping Jesus or we are worshiping some other idol. Jesus clearly states that if we try and satisfy this ‘God-shaped void’ in our life with stuff, food, our kids, relationships, entertainment, money, appearance, exercise, social media, work, etc than we will ‘thirst again’ and never be satisfied. But when we drink of the living water that He gives we are truly content and not empty and hollow.
Lastly, when we live a life of worshiping Jesus (walking with Him, submitting our plans and will to Him) we become springs of living water. We become givers and not takers. We are known for sharing and not hoarding. We don’t use people but rather we bless and serve people. Our souls are satisfied and the joy, peace, security, satisfaction and love that Jesus lavishly pours into our hearts overflows to everyone we meet. Which cup are you drinking from today? Are you drinking from the well of the world or the cup of Living Water that only Jesus offers?
