Your Great Name

“Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  -Philippians 2:9-11

Over the past couple of months I have really enjoyed worshiping to Natalie Grant’s “Your Great Name”.  But I have to confess something; this song can be a challenge to sing.  When I do not fully put my trust in Him, it can be hard to believe that there is so much power in His name. If you know me, you know that I struggle with worrying.  I easily find myself stressed about what tomorrow holds.  It is in these moments that I doubt the power of the name of Jesus.  The lyrics cite many situations we find ourselves in.  I know I have definitely felt lost, fearful, weak, hungry…but all of these things have no place at the sound of His name.

Have you ever sat and really thought about the power that comes in speaking the name of Jesus?  We have all ended our prayers with the line “In Jesus name I pray”, but has it just become routine?  Do those words really mean anything?  One reason I have been so drawn to this song is the way it encompasses so many aspects of the power we find in His name.  In one sense we see the enemy being forced to leave at the sound of Jesus’ name and in another sense we find the hungry and the fatherless receiving grace.

For three summers now, I have seen firsthand the rest that can be found in clinging to His name.  The orphans in Latvia that our team has worked with are truly fatherless.  But it is a beautiful thing when they realize the comfort and hope they can find in Jesus Christ.  My prayer for you is that you will have a renewed sense of wonder at His great name.  I have attached the lyrics to the song- read them with a fresh perspective today.

Your Great Name

Lost are saved; find their way; at the sound of Your great name
All condemned; feel no shame, at the sound of Your great name
Every fear; has no place; at the sound of Your great name
The enemy; he has to leave; at the sound of Your great name

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us, Son of God and Man
You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise Your great name

All the weak; find their strength; at the sound of Your great name
Hungry souls; receive grace; at the sound of Your great name
The fatherless; they find their rest; at the sound of Your great name
Sick are healed; and the dead are raised; at the sound of Your great name

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us, Son of God and Man
You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise Your great name

Redeemer, My Healer, Almighty
My Savior, Defender, You are My King

Jesus, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain for us, Son of God and Man
You are high and lifted up; that all the world will praise Your great name
