So why does sitting alone and doing TV church fall short of the Christian life? Because God made us in His image and our God is a relational God. He is a trinitarian God who exists eternally as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It was not good for man to be alone because by ourselves we fall short of being able to reflect His image to the world. Community is a gift that God gives us so that we can experience what He has always experienced, loving community. God did not create us because He needed us, but rather He created us because of His extravagantly giving and generous nature. He is overflowing with love and He invites us to come and partake of His goodness.
Ever since the Fall of man in Genesis 3 we live in a relationally broken world and we all carry wounds to some degree that are a result of sin. Only through the gospel is their hope for relational healing. Only when we are first reconciled to God through the cross can we then experience reconciliation with others. Christian community therefore becomes one of the greatest proofs of the existence of God. I love Jesus’ prayer in John 17 where He says, ‘ 21 The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind – Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, So they might be one heart and mind with us. Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me.’
Christian community becomes a beautiful and living illustration of the gospel message. When the onlooking world sees a group of people who are from different economic backgrounds, different ages, different color skin, and different interests coming together and serving one another, forgiving one another, encouraging one another and bearing one another’s burdens, they can’t help but take notice. Community puts flesh and blood on the gospel for the people of today. When someone is shown forgiveness, compassion and love they are more likely to receive and believe the forgiveness, compassion and love of Jesus poured out for them. So let’s go preach the gospel today through our relationships!
